The bike was listed on Kijiji for the longest time but I can't find the add again to show you guys.
It was a 2005 YZ 450 F that had burn down and was in need of $1800 motor work. He said that it leaned out putting a hole in the top of the piston. Now for me that seems a little sketchy because I've never heard of a four stroke running lean and buning down, but I don't know if it is possible or not.
I would imagine if it did lean out, it would have damaged the valve, lifters, etc. also.
What might be other reason that these motors might burn down?

i seen an XL175 motor with a hole in the top of the piston from running the wrong plug, the plug was too long and punched a hole right in the top of the piston.

Running lean will cause a hole in a piston and burnt exhaust valves when it runs lean it runs very hot and can burn a hole in the piston or can cause it to size up. Like mx4life said the wrong plug will cause this to if its to long or to hot of a plug.
Preignition and detonation will cause it too if he was running to low of an octane fuel.
$1800 sounds like a lot maybe $800 for a rebuild.

depending on damage and parts needed to be replaced. 1800 is not a far off guestimate....

if he needs a new head. you might as well part it out...
Head, Cam, Cam Chain, Valves, Springs, Piston, Gaskets + probably take it to a shop being how most people don't know how to work on modern 4 strokes = Mucho Greeno!

Ya see thats what I mean, I was looking at buying it and fixing the motor cuz it was going of $2200 cdn obo which even with the cost of parts I would have paid way less then a running one of the same year, but after thinking about it for a few days decided it would be a headache to do yourself and for someone else to do it i wouldn't end up ahead at all.

This really illustrates my 2 stroke thinking,
but the 2 vs 4 is better off for another topic.
That $1,800 is alot,
but it's about right for what it will run on the 4 strokes.

^^^Yes thats why I went back to a two banger two years ago because for the most part I'm only trail riding now, and don't need the expences of rebuilding a fourstroke at some point. I do miss the fourstroke thumper I had last and wouldn't have minded getting another one for cheap to have for a back up or so I could pick which bike fit the ride I wanted to do that day.
