I just bought my first "real" bike, 03 Suzuki RM80. Its small i know, but the price was sweet. needs a motor rebuild and bars and it should be mint. currently has a FMF Goldseries pipe, which is what i believe caused the rings to blow. Previous to this i rode a 78 Suzuki A100 which isnt even a actual dirtbike.

the story goes the guy before me melted a hole in the piston with the stock pipe, got the motor rebuilt, didnt break it in at all, put the FMF on to the fresh motor, didnt rejet, and just started riding. its no wonder the motor is toast again. My plan is to rebuild the motor, reinstall the stock pipe, break it in, then put the FMF on and rejet.

The bike also needs a set of handle bars, but all the controls are there.

Like i said i know the 80 is undersized, but i juts want the bike to play around on. something to do in the summer when i cant ride my snowmobile.

im pretty much new to dirt biking, have a to learn.

heres a pic of the bike off my cell.
03 rm 80
03 rm 80

i ride my snowmobile because my snowmobile doesn't work so well on grass and mud.

Quite the bike you got there. I had a RM80 a few years back, it was a pretty nice bike.

Just go to FMF's website and pull the jetting specs for that pipe and bike. then go one jet up for break-in

my name is Kawasaki_kid because thats the name i use for all forums regardless of subject. makes it much easier to remember. I chose to use that name for all forums because the first forum i joined was a snowmobile forum when i had my first snowmobile, a Kawasaki Intruder.

will i have to jet up to break in with the stock pipe as well? do i have to premix?

how tight should my chain be? my sprockets look okay.

All race bikes are pre-mix. i'd recommend jetting up for any break in, just added assurance IMO.

as for the sprocket, 3 fingers worth of play is generally the rule of thumb (if you can slide 3 fingers between the swingarm and the chain)

like mx said. yes premix. I believe we mix ours 40:1. and for the chain I go to the back of the chain guard on top of the swing arm and do 3 fingers or a little less. What I have noticed on alot of our bikes mainly the 85 and 125 the 250Fs are a little different but if at the end of the rubber chain gaurd on top of the swing arm if the chain starts going back up there thats about right. That may not apply to all bikes though. Still double check with the fingers tho. Looks like a decent bike. What are you plannin on puttin on it for bars?

so if you were going to say ___ inches of play in the chain, youd say?

For bars im not sure about brand or anything yet, nothing too high end, something with some rise, probably standard 7/8 diameter. what are some pros/cons of differant bars?

1.5-2"

for a 85 i would run no less then 32:1. bike has to be ridden in the high RPM and the extra oil will help seizing.

I think every repair manuel says 32:1 so yeah stick to that. If you find ur smoking lots and getting lots of black dripping around ur exhaust ares go to 40:1. If you dont have a repair manuel that should be your first purches and read on the maintenance section really good!

and if you have any other questions dont be shy to ask, i think everyone around here understands the basics and are glad to help.

Actually you will get less smoke and less oil dripping if you mix 40:1 because you are putting less oil into the fuel.

Not exactly true.

Fuel is used to cool the engine as well as burn for power. More oil in the gas (without jetting change) ultimately leads to leaner and hotter burning engine due to decreased fuel to same constant of air, in order to effect the "Spooge" you would need to adjust the size of your jets as well as needle and needle clip position. the oil in the fuel acts as lubricant more so then a power source since it burns more slowly, so yes more oil tends to lead to more oil drip, but not the exact cure to just reduce oil in the pre-mix. 32:1 and 40:1 seem to be the happy medium for a lot of bikes between power and lubricant needs.

Really depends on your fingers, mine are very wide so I usually end up with 2.5" with three fingers.

Welcome and congrats on the bike. Ive riden a RM 80 and they are rather fast and snarly so if your not used to it you could end up on your @$$..haha Usually for break in, no more then half throttle and lower gears to keep your RPMs up but not to over do it. (its what ive been told in the past) I run 32 in my bikes, i find they smoke a little more when they are cold but once warmed up they dont smoke as much and if you keep your RPMs up it shouldnt drool much.
Hope it all works out for ya... "Just twist it"

For break in, run little bigger jets, warm it up, and ride it like you would ride it any day, no holding it for miles, but ride it pretty aggressive to seat the rings properly or you will have issues with the motor
