hey guys, i just bought a 2005 kx 250f yesturday with a few goodies, its got the full pro circuit t-4 pipe and header, green excel rims, hinson clutch etc..
i was riding it around the yard a few laps today, and i noticed some oil leaking out of the bottom of the motor, so i took the front skid plate off and noticed it was all siliconed up. so i phoned the guy i bought it off of to see what he had to say. he said its supposed to have it on there. its where the two halfs of the motor connect. he says it has always had it on there. should i peel it off and replace the silicone or i was thinking a could jb weld it ? what are your opinions on what i should do ? i dont have a clue what i should do. Thanks!
SOLD 2005 kx 250f.

got a picture?
I know with the yamaha cases they are glued together with a silicone/adhesive called yamabond. possible that it could have developed a spot in the case were it's leaking, or could be a more serious issue

I would not recomend JB weld. I will check what mine looks like but I am pretty sure its a glue that you just spread on, like yamahabond. Also are you sure its coming from the bottom of the case? Could it be running down from somewhere else? on my 07' kx I always had a small amount of oil that would get on the skid plate/frame area. I dont know where it was coming from but I never lost very much so I didnt worry about it. Like I said it wasnt much at all, when I would take it off the stand you could see a lil on the top of the stand and if you looked there was some on the skid plate but not much. Just make sure you locate where its coming from before you redo your silicone or what ever.

yeah, it looked like silicone was just spread over it. so are you saying there is no gasket that is supposed to be. because it was leaking from a spot where the silicone has started peeling off a bit. should i just buy some yamabond ang seal it all up again?

Yamaha bond I believe is similar to a gasket. I dont think you will be able to just put it on and seal it. In my experience you put that on like a gasket, so you would have the cases split scrape off the old stuff then put the yamahabond on and spread it around then put the cases back together.

when the cases are bolted back together it squishes the liquid gasket out and fills into the porous aluminum. have to scrape it off, clean the surfaces with a contact cleaner and re-apply

Man that sounds so hack, why would you have to silicone anything? God damn 4strokes. Want to hear my opinion, sell it and buy a 250 smoker.

Actually more important for us to have our cases sealed tight since they are pressurized and that is how our fuel flows into the cylinder

not necessarily... your problem is in the transmission part of the cases, (separate from the crank.) Now if it was a crank seal then it would run like **** and more then likely blow the top end

No manufacturer in their right mind would use silicoln to seal the case halves. It probably developed a small leak and the former owner smeared it on there in a half assed attempt to fix it. Silicoln by itself won't stick very long where petrolium products are introduced. It eventually gets soft and looses its adhesion ( just like you've witnessed).
If you don't want to split the case you could run down to the local hardware store and pick up some 3-bond. or go to a yamaha dealer and get some yamabond. Clean up the area very good with some carb cleaner and try smearing it around while trying to push it into the case where the leak is.
Wether it will work or not, I don't know. It's the best idea I can come up with.
If you can't afford a new four stroke, you can't afford a used one either!
