Some guy wants to trade my 1996 Kawasaki KX250 for their 2003 125sx. The 125 has a blown top end and he said he will add $200. The KTM dealer told me as long as the bike turns over freely its the top end but when they seize its in the bottom end. this guy says the bike turns over freely and all is well. I'm going to have a look at this bike and I'm going to pull the fly wheel cover to check the crank baering play. I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the matter? Also what everyone's experiences are with blown up bikes? Not buying blown up bikes just blowing your own and what not.

id keep your running 125cc extra bike you have now. The year doesn't make a difference. Bikes have been the same forever. a blown up bike could have many things wrong with it. The cylinder could be scratched, chipped. The head can be damaged, little peices of metal down in the crank. Id keep your bike.

I would look into it, but chances are that if they are willing to trade their 2003 125 not running for your 1996 250 running, then their 125 must be in a lot worse shape then your 250.

Top ends on a two stroke aren't all that much and if you have the skill to do it yourself then you will end up with a descent bike in the end. But like you said I would be making sure the crank is good.

well that bike blown up is only worth about $1300 here and he is adding $200 on top. I paid $1300 for my bike but can get $1500 for it. He said he didn't mind if I pulled some small stuff off as long as I took the bike or put it back on.

I got prices from the KTM dealer on parts and a Vertex piston for it is only $130. Crank bearings are $100 for one side and $30 for the other. A base gasket is $15 and the head gasket is O-rings that I'm going to try re-use, if not they're $20 for a pair. If its just a top end I can fix it with the money he is adding on top. He said if I didn't trade him he was just going to take it in to his school and get them to rebuild it.

Never re-use piston rings, especially on a 2 stroke

Haha, I was talking about the head gasket being O-rings and re-using them if they are alright. I would never re-use piston rings.

Well in the diesel shop I did co-op at we re-used lots of stuff like that. As long as the rubber isn't cracked then its still good. The rubber doesn't compress at all. On the wet sleeves in a diesel if the o-rings are twisted it will eventually push the sleeve into the piston and wreck the piston and sleeve. Which is why I figured I could re-use them if they looked alright.

Well it was blown up pretty good. The cylinder needed to be nickasiled and it needed a bottom end done too. I don't think I'll be trading haha.

add a grand to the purchase? now that raises a big red flag to me of why he's so anxious to get rid of that bike...

Well I'm going to get a bill of sale with it from him and the VIN was still there. He has a lot of balls to bring me to his house and sell me something stolen though if that is the case.

Well all I can do is hope. He said he wants to trade because he needs something to get to work on everyday. He also said if I didn't make up my mind soon about the trade than the bike wasn't going to be available because he was going to get his school's auto teacher to rebuild it.
