I figured that because there is absolutely nothing going on around here these days that I would make a thread about doing the top end on my recently acquired 1998 Yamaha YZ250.

I was out riding this weekend and all was good until I had no powerband. The bike would have tons down low but it just fell on its face in the higher RPM's. Upon disassembly I found that the power valve wasn't functioning due to a screw coming out and a piece breaking clean off. I also found a piece of the piston is stuck to the cylinder. I don't have pictures of the cylinder because the camera isn't good enough for all those up close pictures but here is what I have.

Yea I guess so haha. The only thing I'm worried about is the piece of piston stuck to the cylinder. If I have to get it Nikasiled than I won't be able to put a piston in it for a couple more weeks.

How much do you think its gonna cost? My friend bought a yz85 about a month ago, he let me ride it and it blew up within the first 3 or 4 hours. Its gonna cost him around $850 haha. It sucks man, but theres not much you can do I guess.

A top end shouldnt cost more than a couple hundred. If his was 850 on a small bike he musta had to put a crank or crank bearings or somthing in it.

There are only 2 places in Canada that do it supposedly. I should have the cylinder back in 10-15 days.

MX was definately faster on the track, but I think I did alright for being 250 pounds and only been on 2 wheels since October of 2009.

Well I have the cylinder and everything is back together except for the head, powervalve, and countershaft seal. Hoping to see the powervalve parts on monday. Grand total so far: $850 and I still owe just under $100.

That all depends what you do. Easy $200 for piston, rigns, gaskets. Couple hundred for valves, couple hundred for springs. couple hundred for each cam. So it depends what you get, and if you go with aftermarket, you can start bout' doubling the cost. It adds up real quick. I think when I did my honda it was like $1200, with Pro Circuit parts with my racing discount.

Anyone know how far out my fuel-air mixture screw should be? I was checking out the carb and its only out about 1/4 turn. My main jet is also a 170. Didn't check the needle or pilot though yet. Once my bike is broken in I need to change my jetting up a little bit as my bike runs really rich and boggles mid range.

Which way is richer and which way is leaner? It won't start now after the first start and my foot is really sore from the insane compression.
